OPPD: What do deceitful people do?

That's a good question. What do deceitful people do? What do liars look like, especially those "public figures" at the Omaha Public Power District. They lied? Really? What exactly did they lie about?

THE OPPD PROMISE: As reported by KETV-TV, for more than a decade, OPPD’s plan was to transition Units 4 and 5 to natural gas by 2023 and open the two new natural gas plants. For at least half a decade, OPPD planned to retire Units 1, 2 and 3 in North Omaha. The Omaha Public Power District (OPPD) "promised" to retire its North Omaha coal plant by 2023.

BACKGROUND: This coal-fired power plant has been a major source of pollution in the North Omaha area for years, sending soot, mercury and other toxins into the air, water and soil - and into children's lungs. This pollution has led to high rates of asthma, heart and lung disease and premature deaths for people in the area. This is a significant environmental justice issue. In addition, continuing to burn coal sends millions of tons of CO2 into the atmosphere, further aggravating the causes of the climate crisis. However, the OPPD Board of Directors and Senior Management, the majority of whom do not live in the affected area, have unilaterally decided to keep burning coal at its North Omaha plant. Of course, as usual, OPPD will "allow opportunities" for public input, but it'll have absolutely no value. However, to "build trust" in the community, perhaps, OPPD should consider the following:

1. All members of the OPPD Board of Directors and Senior Management, and their families, voluntarily move into temporary lodging located no less than eight-hundred-(800) meters or one-half-mile from the North Omaha coal plant, and they remain there until the closure of the coal burning facility;

2. Given the failure of Douglas County Treasurer John Ewing to properly calculate and distribute annual payments OPPD makes in liew of paying property taxes, that OPPD unilaterally withhold payments to Douglas County and re-distribute these funds directly to residents in North Omaha who live in the affected area for payment of their medical expenses, real estate and relocation expenses, and personal protective equipment (PPE); and

3. As established by Nebraska Eminent Domain Laws, Chapter 76, Article Seven of Nebraska Revised Statutes. R.R.S. Neb. § 76-725 that the state of Nebraska acquire, by eminent domain, all real estate property, residential and commercial, pertinent to areas subject to pollution by the coal burning facility; and that OPPD be required to reimburse all affected residential and commercial property owners, renters, etc.

Wait a minute. Perhaps "those people" in North Omaha are overreacting. For example, "those people" at OPPD are good people, people with families, and they go to church, they hopefully pay their taxes, and of course, they're honestly concerned about the health, safety, and welfare of others, including "those people" in North Omaha. Surely those "good people" at OPPD haven't forgotten about the Omaha Lead Superfund Site comprised of residential properties, child-care centers, and other residential-type properties in the city of Omaha, Nebraska, where the surface soil is contaminated as a result of deposition of 125 years of air emissions from historic lead smelting and refining operations. Or, is OPPD indifferent to the health, safety, and welfare of residents in North Omaha? Surely, not. Of course, not. No way, because Omaha, Nebraska is bereft of racial and income segregation, right?

Surely, the lead poisoning and related deaths of residents in Flint, Michigan due to contaminated water via the indifference and negligence of non-minorities who ultimately control all aspects of water in Flint, Michigan is not being duplicated by non-minorities who ultimately control all aspects of OPPD? Surely, not. Of course, not. No way, because Omaha, Nebraska is bereft of racial and income segregation, right?

So, without a doubt, you can "trust" those good people at OPPD, right? You know, just like the following people who were "trusted" by dozens, or hundreds, or thousands, or millions of people.

Clearly, the "trustworthiness" of the OPPD Board of Directors and its Senior Management team is not only reminiscent of those who held fidicuary responsibility of the "public trust" in Flint, Michigan but should remind you of the following.

Is it "fair" to
compare OPPD's leadership to a peer
utility in Flint, Michigan?

Fair?

Fair?

Why don't
you ask people in North
Omaha, who've been deceived,
ask them
about "fairness."

THE
"CITY OF OMAHA" OPERATES ON LAND THAT HAS BEEN A
SITE OF HUMAN ACTIVITY FOR THOUSANDS
OF YEARS.

THE
"CITY OF OMAHA"
WAS THE TERRITORY OF THE UMONHON (OMAHA), PONCA, PAWNEE, OTOE, MISSOURI, AND THE IOWAY PEOPLES.

UMONHON MEANS “UPSTREAM,” A
NAME MARKING THE TRIBE’S SETTLEMENT LOCATION ON THE BANKS OF THE MISSOURI RIVER.

NEBRASKA’S NAME
IS DERIVED FROM
THE WORD “NIBTHASKA” MEANING “ATWATER” IN THE UMONHON LANGUAGE.

IN 1854, THE
UMONHON TRIBE
WAS LED TO BELIEVE THAT THEY WERE SECURING U.S. PROTECTION BY SIGNING A TREATY, GIVING UP THE LAND THAT NOW MAKES
UP THE "CITY OF OMAHA."

DECEITFUL.

THROUGH SEVERAL BROKEN TREATIES,
THE UMONHON HAVE
A RESERVATION ONE HOUR NORTH OF OMAHA.

LESSON
LEARNED?

GIVEN THE LEGACY
OF THE "CITY OF OMAHA," OPPD
IS JUST AS DECEITFUL.

CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES
Deceitful and contemptous actions of the
U.S. Congress against 9/11 First Responders

QUESTION: Is there absolutely no one you can trust?

ANSWER:

Wow, as sung by B.B. King even your mother, or father, might be lying too!

Likewise, as a public figure, what kind of "leadership" is OPPD's CEO L. Javier Fernandez providing to his children?

"Daddy, you mean it's okay to lie, to break
your promise and let people get sick?"
