The Joy of Trolling OPS Board Members!

Recently "someone" decided it was a good idea to troll social media web sites, specifically FaceBook.com and Instagram.com, to see if any of the nine-(9) members of the Omaha Public School (OPS) Board of Education (BOE) have any "questionable" or "obscene" content that might be perceived as not in the best interest of students, parents, and the general public. You know, content that's not illegal, but might otherwise offend, shock, distrub, or even anger some of the more puritan and God-fearing people of metro Omaha. Amen.

Of course, the OPS BOE members "exposed" for posting "questionable" content on their social media platforms are Black men; so they must be guilty in the public court of social justice, which is ESPECIALLY true of Omaha, Nebraska. Keep in mind, it doesn't make any difference if these individuals are doing a great job representing their districts, or that they've never violated any laws or BOE policies. Why? Because in Omaha, as with the beating, stabbing, shooting, hanging, burning and murder of Will Brown, and the beating of Robert Wagner, and the beating of Octavious Johnson and other men and women of color, and as detailed in "Anatomy of Traffic Stops," by former City of Omaha Public Safety Auditor Tristan, its always been been "open season" to limit or terminate the "freedoms" of people of color. Punish first, and maybe ask questions later.

Hum. What is "obscene" content?

In the 1957 case of Roth v. United States, the Supreme Court affirmed the view that obscenity lacks First Amendment protection. The Court defined obscene speech as being "utterly without redeeming social importance" in which "to the average person, applying contemporary community standards, the dominant theme of the material taken as a whole appeals to prurient interest." However, for the next sixteen years the Supreme Court was unable to reach a definition of obscenity that satisfied a majority of its members. A new standard was finally established in the case of Miller v. California, decided in June 1973, which upheld the conviction of a man for violating a California obscenity law against sending a mass mailing advertisement featuring sexual pictures and drawings. Chief Justice Warren Burger, who was appointed by President Richard Nixon in 1969 and served as chief justice until 1986, wrote the deciding opinion, joined by four others. Burger established a three-part test to define obscenity as material that appealed to prurient interest, portrayed sexual conduct "in a patently offensive way," and did not have "serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value." Excerpts from Burger's opinion are found in the following selection.

Given the aforementioned "legal" definition of "obscenity," how many members of the OPS BOE have or are engaging in obscene content, within the community served by OPS, that appeals to the: (1) prurient interest; (2) involves offensive sexual conduct; or (3) has no serious literary, artistic, political, or scientific value? Hum. Good question.

OBSERVATION: It's really sad how some people selectively "pick and choose" what they find "objectionable," or "truthful" or "moral." You know, that's exactly what religious zealots do, those Christians (Bible), Jews (Tora), Muslims (Quran) they "pick and chose" what religious dogma or scriptures to believe. You know what else, that's exactly what self-serving politicians do, they "pick and chose" what dogma or governing principles to believe - those Republicans and Democrats, and the zealots who promote the multitude of governmental paradigms that perpetually disagree on the efficacy of capitalism versus authoritarianism versus communism versus socialism and so on and so on.

In 2021, Johnny-come-lately "social justice warriors" actively troll (i.e., monitor) social media web sites of both public figures and public institutions to identify and assess their veracity for being "egalitarian, ethical, and inclusive." Hum, but given the social condemnation for engaging in sexist, racist, homophobic, deviant, cult-based, nihilist (and yada, yada, yada) conduct, isn't it also blatantly "obscene" to engage in the aforementioned behavior? Of course, it is! So, let's look closely at how all members of the OPS BOE present themselves, and equally important, what do they omit from their "public image" in social media.

Here are the protagonists.

Looking beyond the aforementioned sarcasm and parody, frankly, based on the "social media public image" presented by all members of the OPS BOE, there clearly appear to be some sexist, racist, narcissistic, and some extremely underperforming people caring for the educational outcomes of OPS students. Golly gee whiz, that's business as usual for OPS, and that's the bigger story.

For the local print and broadcast media to focus their attention solely on the two Black male members of the BOE, well, what can you expect from Omaha's White owned and White controlled print and broadcast media. It truly must have been a "slow news day."

Trust me!

I welcome your feedback.
