Subj: FYI - Racist Coverage of Star Trek

Lee Kravitz, Editor
Parade Magazine

Dear Mr. Kravitz:

Thank you for your feature [Parade, 11/25/01] on the new Star Trek television series, "Enterprise." But, I'm very disappointed that the head line text in the actual story omitted Captain Sisko from the series "Deep Space Nine."

To list the Star Trek captains in their proper chronology but then exclude the third captain played by Black actor Avery Brooks can only be perceived as lazy journalism or racism. Clearly, if space was a problem you should have eliminated Captain Janeway who was, after all, the fourth captain. Worse, it's insulting because - on the face of it - yet again white males AND a white female must FIRST be recognized before a Black man's rightful achievement can be recognized. Yes, you applauded Star Trek but obviously you don't know what "TREK" is about. Trek was not and is not about one race or sex being better than another. For one thing, Trek is about the individual being recognized for his or her accomplishments, or failures.

I simply request you "respect" the on-going values presented by Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry and his successors should you decide to print subsequent articles on the landmark television series. Please.

Sincerely,

Trip Reynolds
